The book brings together for the first time the entire corpus of Ostrogoth anthroponyms, derived from the indexing of the late antique Greek, Latin and Gothic sources, both manuscript and epigraphical, even those that have only recently been found or published. Unlike other preceding treatises, the names collected here do not relate solely to the period of the Ostrogoth kingdom in Italy, but also to the previous centuries, that is from when the Ostrogoth social structure made its first historical appearance. It also includes the names of Gothic tradition that persisted in Italy after 553, in certain areas surviving up to the early years of the seventh century. This makes it possible to grasp the evolution of Ostrogoth onomastics over time: the influence of Latin names, the cases of dual Latin-Gothic names, of mixed marriages and of fashions in the families' choices of names that followed the shifting religious and political aspects of the epoch. The final chapters are then devoted to linguistic analyses that delineate the characteristics of the anthroponymy of the Ostrogoths, its phonetic peculiarities, the interference of Latin and the morphological adaptations in the late antique sources, both Latin and Greek.

Per la prima volta, il volume raccoglie l'intero corpus degli antroponimi ostrogoti, ricavati dalla schedatura delle fonti tardo-antiche latine, greche e gotiche, sia manoscritte che epigrafiche, anche di recente ritrovamento e pubblicazione. A differenza di altri precedenti trattati, i nomi qui raccolti non riguardano solo il periodo del regno ostrogoto d'Italia, ma anche i secoli precedenti, da quando cioè si comincia a discernere la compagine ostrogota nella storia. E si includono anche quei nomi di tradizione gotica che in Italia persistono dopo il 553, arrivando in certe zone fino ai primi anni del VII secolo. Ciò consente di cogliere l'evoluzione nel tempo dell'onomastica ostrogota: l'influenza dei nomi latini, i casi di nomi doppi latino-gotici, di matrimoni misti, di mode nella scelta dei nomi da parte delle famiglie, che seguono i cangianti atteggiamenti religiosi e politici dell'epoca. Seguono, negli ultimi capitoli, le analisi linguistiche che delineano le caratteristiche dell'antroponimia degli Ostrogoti, le sue peculiarità fonetiche, l'interferenza del latino, gli adattamenti morfologici nelle fonti tardo-antiche sia latine che greche.
