      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>The individual life, analysed by Georg Simmel, provides analytic tools for an understanding, not only of man in early industrial society, but also of the man of today. Imitation and distinction, fashion and theatre, the circulation of money, or the models of individuality expressed by Goethe and by Rembrandt, represent "aesthetic solutions" to the quest for identity that lacerates modern man in the face of the crisis of absolutes and the polytheism of values. There is a deep weft, indeed, in the writings of Georg Simmel that justifies a revision of the current academic definitions of "sociological impressionism" and "journalistic philosophy". This is a unified mesh created by constant references to aesthetics, understood as a philosophy that explores the structures of meaning of individual and social life. This bringing together of fields of investigation traditionally considered as remote and incommensurable – such as sociology and aesthetics – makes Simmel's meditation one of the most stimulating adventures in contemporary thought.

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>La vita individuale analizzata da Georg Simmel nel mondo artistico fornisce strumenti per la comprensione non solo dell'uomo della prima società industriale, ma anche di quello presente. L'imitazione e la distinzione, la moda e l'attività teatrale, la circolazione del denaro o i modelli di individualità espressi da Goethe e da Rembrandt rappresentano, infatti, «soluzioni estetiche» alla domanda di identità che lacera l'uomo moderno di fronte alla crisi degli assoluti e al politeismo dei valori. Esiste perciò una trama profonda nella produzione di Simmel, che giustifica la revisione delle definizioni, correnti negli studi, di «impressionismo sociologico» e di «filosofia giornalistica». Tale unità è realizzata dal costante riferimento all'estetica, intesa come filosofia che indaga le strutture di significato della vita individuale e sociale. L'avere unito campi di indagine tradizionalmente ritenuti lontani o incommensurabili – come la sociologia e l'estetica – fa della meditazione simmeliana una delle più stimolanti avventure del pensiero contemporaneo.</p>
