      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>Between the Middle Ages and the end of the eighteenth century, taxation in Europe was very different from that of modern society. It was characterised by the predominance of indirect taxes over direct, with the latter being substantially irregular. The studies published in these proceedings of Study Week promoted by the Fondazione Datini examine the comparative evolution of the European fiscal systems and fiscal policies and the effects of taxation on the economy. The wealth of specific and original contributions, as well as the attempts at structural organisation, reveal the distinct vivacity of European and western historiography, offering an overall and articulated picture of the European tax systems in the pre-industrial age.</p>

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>La fiscalità in Europa, tra il Medioevo e la fine del Settecento, era profondamente diversa da quella che connota la società contemporanea ed era caratterizzata dal prevalere delle imposte indirette rispetto a quelle dirette, connotate, queste ultime, da una sostanziale aperiodicità. Gli studi pubblicati in questi atti della Settimana di studi promossa dalla Fondazione Datini esaminano l'evoluzione comparata dei sistemi fiscali europei, le politiche fiscali e gli effetti della tassazione sull'economia. La ricchezza di contributi specifici ed originali, così come dei tentativi di sistemazione organica, mostrano una particolare vivacità della storiografia europea ed occidentale, offrendo un quadro complesso e articolato dei regimi fiscali europei in età preindustriale.</p>
