Plutarch’s work Beasts are rational is a fictitious dialogue linked with Circe’s episode in the Odyssey. It contains a lively discussion between Odysseus and a (speaking) pig named Gryllus, who prefers to be an animal rather than become a man again (as he was before). The discussion specifically takes place in the situation of Od. 12, in the night before Odysseus’ departure. Gryllus prevails, by claiming that beasts are more virtuous than men.
