The incident involving Empona took place in the years 70 to 79 CE. The story was narrated by Plutarch just after his own marriage (i.e., around 70 CE), but is reported by his son Autoboulus. A reference is made to Domitian’s death (96 CE) as well as to Empona’s two sons, one of whom reportedly died in Egypt (in 116-117 accordingly to Cichorius), while the other had “recently” been hosted by Plutarch at Delphi – which amounts to a blatant anachronism. My reading introduces two new points: (1) Cichorius dating is hardly convincing. In my opinion the young man died either in 104 CE, during the riots at Alexandria, or in the following year, when the legio III Cyrenaica invaded the Nabataean kingdom. (2) Plutarch’s speech ends at the second-to-last line of 770C, and the following words (βούλομαι δὲ...) are Autoboulus’, and are part of the dialogue functioning as a frame for the Erotikos. If this is correct, the anachronism disappears.
