      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>Despite being recognised as an exponent of Slovenian culture, the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor has to date been undervalued in terms of his direct contribution to the aesthetic and literary consciousness of his homeland. He has been considered above all as a source of material for the works of others, while studies of broader scope underlining his original contribution in the sphere of Carniolan narrative, albeit in German, are still lacking. The present study, based on an attentive reading of the four volumes that compose his principal work, Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain, seeks to identify all the passages that can be considered narrative units, numbering them progressively, cataloguing them by type and providing a brief summary of each. The corpus thus obtained – recorded in the appendix – has been described and appraised. Finally, individual narrative units have been compared with stories or popular songs of analogous content. The work is concluded by an evaluation of Valvasor's narrative gifts, setting the writer in a new light within the cultural and literary history of Slovenia.</p>

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>Pur protagonista riconosciuto della cultura slovena, il polimata Johann Weichard Valvasor è stato finora sottovalutato riguardo al suo contributo diretto alla coscienza estetico-letteraria della sua terra, essendo stato soprattutto considerato quale fonte di materiale per opere altrui, mentre mancano ancora lavori di vasto respiro che ne sottolineino l'apporto originale nel campo della narrativa carniolana, sia pure in lingua tedesca. Il presente studio, sulla base di un'attenta lettura dei quattro volumi che costituiscono la sua opera principale, Die Ehre Dess Hertzogthums Crain, si è proposto di individuare tutti quei passi che possono essere considerati unità narrative, dotandole di una numerazione progressiva, catalogandole per tipi e corredandole di un breve sommario. Il corpus così ottenuto – riportato in appendice – è stato descritto e valutato. Singole unità narrative sono state poste infine a confronto con racconti o canti popolari di analogo contenuto. Il lavoro si conclude con una valutazione della narratività di Valvasor, conferendo così a questo autore una collocazione nuova nella storia culturale e letteraria della Slovenia.</p>
