      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>Developing a social theory that pivoted on communication, Habermas became one of the most influential thinkers of the second half of the twentieth century. Taking this as a starting point, Hauke Brunkhorst offers us a supple but exhaustive intellectual biography of Habermas, from his famous 1953 criticism of Heidegger, through the Frankfurt of the 60s and 70s up to the positing of his theories in the most recent debates on eugenic practices, on the conflict between the secular state and religion, on the issue of global politics and the relations between law and constitution. According to Brunkhorst, Habermas's communicative revolution, if taken seriously, implies an ideal of radical democratic inclusion that proves indispensable not only to guarantee the legitimacy of the institutions but also to ensure their stability. In the final section of the book this theory is discussed in the light of the issue of the globalisation of politics and the internationalisation of law.</p>

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>Habermas è divenuto uno dei più influenti pensatori della seconda metà del Novecento con la svolta comunicativa della sua teoria della società. A partire da questa constatazione, Hauke Brunkhorst offre un'agile ma completa biografia intellettuale di Habermas, dalla famosa critica a Heidegger nel 1953, attraverso la Francoforte degli anni '60 e '70, sino all'imporsi delle sue tesi nei più recenti dibattiti sulle prassi eugenetiche, sul conflitto tra stato laico e religione, sul problema della politica globale e sul rapporto tra diritto e costituzione. Secondo Brunkhorst, la svolta comunicativa habermasiana, se presa sul serio, implica un ideale di radicale inclusione democratica, che si rivela indispensabile sia per garantire legittimità alle istituzioni che per assicurare loro stabilità. Nell'ultima parte del libro, tale tesi è discussa alla luce del problema della globalizzazione della politica e dell'internazionalizzazione del diritto.</p>
