      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>Media Education is an increasingly more topical area of investigation and one that calls for urgent and profound reflection. This book is designed to offer a reading of the more or less explicit contributions made to the subject by Umberto Eco. As a multi-faceted intellectual (semiologist, sociologist, journalist etc.), he proposes a key to the reading of contemporary society and the media, offering suggestions both theoretical and methodological, both semiological and sociological-critical. Exploiting an approach that goes beyond the "apocalyptic" and the "integrated", he has refined a meta- and inter-disciplinary attitude and a critical vocation that traverse his entire extensive production on the media. This complex and articulated meditation has also given rise to a perspective on Media Education which has not been sufficiently noted to date, but which proves to be of considerable significance in theoretical and operational terms. Advanced, cultured and telling.

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>La Media Education si pone oggi come un campo di indagine sempre più attuale e come una riflessione sempre più urgente. Il presente testo intende offrire una lettura dei contributi, più o meno espliciti, offerti da Umberto Eco sull'argomento. Da poliedrico intellettuale (semiologo, sociologo, giornalista ecc.) egli propone una chiave di lettura dei media e della società contemporanea, offrendo suggerimenti sia metodologici che teorici, sia semiologici che sociologico-critici. Servendosi di un approccio oltre gli «apocalittici» e oltre gli «integrati», ha sviluppato uno sguardo meta- e inter- disciplinare e una vocazione critica che attraversano trasversalmente tutta la sua ampia produzione sui media. Tale pensiero complesso e articolato ha dato corpo anche a una prospettiva di Media Education che, fin qui, non è stata abbastanza rilevata. Ma che risulta, teoricamente e operativamente, assai rilevante. Avanzata, colta e significativa.</p>
