        <p>This publication is comprised within a recent strand of studies devoted to scholastic culture, understood as an original and complex form of mediation between academic and popular culture. The history of scholastic disciplines is actually one of the most innovative and interesting sectors of the social history of education, and also links up with similar initiatives in other academic sectors, even at international level. These include studies on scholastic and educational publishing, the history of professional associations in the area of geography and cartography (both local and national), and on possible interactions between classical geographical studies and technological applications (digital history and geography). The study of geography teaching, in particular, is extremely useful and significant for analysing: the structure, functioning and changes in scholastic culture; the contribution it made at the time of foundation and consolidation of the Italian State and at other times of political and cultural discontinuity and, finally, the tormented relations of scholastic geography with numerous aspects of an ideological nature and related to the building of Italian identity. 
From a methodical and historical aspect, the approach of this book is distinctly interdisciplinary: it involves specialists from scientific communities that differ in their origins and current structure, but share the same argument of study and the wish for open exchange. The various contributions seek to highlight the close interrelations between past and present in geography, never severing the links between current and historic study, between the educational and operational concerns of today and those of yesterday. Rather, they underscore the importance and advantages of a historic perspective, which can supply useful keys for interpreting the moments of discontinuity and the (ideal and operational) tensions that have distinguished geographical culture, both scholastic and academic.

        <p>La pubblicazione si inserisce in un recente filone di studi che si dedica allo studio della cultura scolastica, intesa come un'originale e complessa forma di mediazione tra la cultura accademica e quella popolare.  La storia delle discipline scolastiche rappresenta, infatti, uno dei settori più innovativi e interessanti della storia sociale dell'educazione e si collega a analoghe iniziative di altri settori scientifici, anche in ambito internazionale: ricerche sull'editoria scolastico-educativa, sulla storia dell'associazionismo professionale in campo geografico e cartografico (sia locale che nazionale), sulle possibili interazioni fra studi geografici classici e applicazioni tecnologiche (storia e geografia digitali). Lo studio dell'insegnamento della geografia, in particolare, è estremamente utile e significativo per analizzare: la struttura, il funzionamento e il cambiamento della cultura scolastica; il contributo fornito al momento della fondazione e del consolidamento dello stato italiano e in altri momenti di discontinuità politica e culturale; il travagliato rapporto della geografia scolastica con numerosi aspetti di carattere ideologico e di costruzione dell'identità italiana. 
Dal punto di vista metodologico e storiografico questo volume presenta un approccio fortemente interdisciplinare e coinvolge specialisti appartenenti a comunità scientifiche diverse per origine e attuale configurazione, ma accomunati dal medesimo argomento di studio e dalla volontà di un aperto confronto. I vari contributi cercano di mettere in evidenza le strette interrelazioni esistenti tra passato e presente della geografia, privilegiando un approccio che non recide mai i legami tra lo studio attuale e quello storico, tra le preoccupazioni didattiche e operative odierne e quelle di ieri: al contrario, mette in  evidenza l'importanza e i vantaggi di una prospettiva storica, che può fornire utili chiavi di lettura dei momenti di discontinuità e delle tensioni (ideali e operative) che contrassegnano la cultura geografica, sia scolastica che accademica.
