      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party.
The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968.</p>

      <abstract xml:lang="it">
        <p>Karel Teige è stato uno dei principali teorici dell'avanguardia cecoslovacca e la sua attività è legata ai più importanti contributi culturali che hanno arricchito la Repubblica Cecoslovacca nella prima metà del XX secolo. Proclamandosi marxista, egli fu spesso in polemica con il pensiero liberale-pragmatico ceco, ma una svolta significativa nella sua vita avvenne in concomitanza con la nascita dei totalitarismi europei, quando sul finire degli anni Trenta dovette fare i conti con l'invasione nazista del suo paese e con la versione locale dello stalinismo. Dopo la guerra mondiale fu emarginato dalla vita culturale e morì perseguitato, nel mezzo di una feroce campagna di diffamazione da parte del Partito Comunista.
Il presente volume offre un ritratto di questo protagonista della cultura europea e del processo di riscoperta che negli anni Sessanta ha permesso di reintegrare la sua opera ed il suo pensiero all'interno di quel ricchissimo recupero culturale sfociato nella Primavera di Praga del 1968.
