      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>This book gives an analysis of the role of the bioactive sphingolipids sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and ceramide 1-phosphate (C1P) in the skeletal muscle. The enzyme that produces S1P, sphingosine kinase 1 (SK1) has proved crucial in the biological action of growth factors and cytokines involved in the inflammatory process that follows muscular damage. Indeed, in myoblasts the cytokine TGF&amp;#946; exercises its fibrotic action through induction of the SK1/S1P axis. Furthermore, the PDGF growth factor, positive regulator of proliferation and motility, activates the enzyme SK1 and the transactivation of S1P1 inhibits the proliferation and induces the migration induced by the growth factor. Finally, the mitogenic role of C1P in myoblasts has been identified, characterizing the signalling pathways involved.</p>

        <p>In questo volume è stato analizzato il ruolo degli sfingolipidi bioattivi sfingosina 1-fosfato (S1P) e ceramide 1-fosfato (C1P) nel muscolo scheletrico. L'enzima che produce S1P, sfingosina chinasi 1 (SK1) è risultato cruciale nell'azione biologica di fattori di crescita e citochine coinvolti del processo infiammatorio che segue il danno muscolare. In mioblasti, infatti, la citochina TGF&amp;#946; esercita la sua azione fibrotica mediante induzione dell'asse SK1/S1P. Inoltre, il fattore di crescita PDGF, regolatore positivo di proliferazione e motilità, attiva l'enzima SK1 e la transattivazione di S1P1 inibisce la proliferazione e induce la migrazione indotte dal fattore di crescita. Infine è stato identificato il ruolo mitogenico di C1P in mioblasti, caratterizzando le vie di segnalazione coinvolte.</p>
