        <p>The strategic importance of "operations" is the key element, the common thread that runs throughout the book. It is on this basis that the Author proposes, in the first chapter, an interpretation of the production strategy independent from a mere content and categorical approach, to integrate the aspects of positioning ("position", strategic groups of producers), goals ("perspective"), strategic levers ("ploy"), action plan ("pattern"), plan and of the aspects related to resources and capabilities. The second chapter introduces the concept of "world class manufacturing", meant as a system of basic principles, guidelines and general criteria for the design and management of the production system that seems to characterise excellent companies and on which three fundamental approaches of lean production can be successfully applied: Just-In-Time, Total Quality Management and Employee Involvement. Finally, the third chapter constitutes a first attempt to empirical verification of the hypotheses formulated.</p>

        <p>La valenza strategica delle "operations" è l'elemento chiave, il filo conduttore che percorre tutto il libro. E' su questa base che l'Autore propone, nel capitolo primo, una lettura della strategia di produzione che si svincola da un mero approccio contenutistico e categoriale, per integrare gli aspetti del posizionamento ("position", gruppi strategici di produttori), degli obiettivi ("perspective"), delle leve strategiche ("ploy"), di schema d'azione ("pattern"), di piano ("plan") e quelli delle risorse e competenze. Il capitolo secondo introduce, poi, il "world class manufacting", inteso quale un sistema di principi di base, di linee guida e criteri generali di progettazione e gestione del sistema produttivo che sembra caratterizzare le imprese eccellenti e su cui si possono efficacemente innescare tre approcci fondamentali della produzione snella: il Just-In-Time, il Total Quality Management ed il coinvolgimento dei dipendenti. Il capitolo terzo costituisce, infine, un primo tentativo di verifica empirica delle ipotesi formulate.</p>
