An accurate definition of memory would embarrass any serious scholar. Briefly, memory could be defined as a wonderful mechanism, a way to transport us back in time. Memory is therefore a mental activity that binds us over time, it is what gives meaning to the existence. Self-narration or autobiography means first of all asking oneself about the status of one's own identity, it means communication, communicating to ourselves and to others who we are; it means transforming the interior monologue into dialogue with otherness; it means marking and regulating our emotions through the representation of the events of our life.

Una precisa definizione della memoria getterebbe in imbarazzo qualsiasi serio studioso. In modo sintetico, si potrebbe definire la memoria come un meccanismo meraviglioso, un mezzo per trasportarci indietro nel tempo. La memoria è quindi un'attività mentale che ci lega nel tempo, è ciò che dà un senso all'esistenza. Narrare di sé, l'autobiografia, significa innanzitutto interrogarsi sullo statuto della propria identità, significa comunicazione, comunicare a noi stessi e agli altri chi siamo; significa trasformare il monologo interiore in dialogo con l'alterità; significa scandire e dare regolazione alle nostre emozioni mediante la rappresentazione degli eventi della nostra vita.
