        <p>The text is the result of research and didactic activities in the context of urban planning courses held by the author at the university of Florence. It is to be considered as an aid in the study of urban phenomena, as a research tool and as an opportunity to arouse interest in urban planning operators towards a global approach to the problems of urban design. The text, preceded by an introductory essay by Antonio Acuto, examines the historical aspects from the development of railways in the nineteenth century to the consequences of changes in the current territorial and urban structures and the more properly architectural and qualitative aspects, tracing a concise history of the architecture of stations and of the impact in terms of renewing the city's image. The contents investigate urban planning issues, analysing the urban design options currently adopted to reduce functional conflicts and to mutually enhance railway and city facilities.</p>

        <p>Il testo costituisce l'esito di ricerche e d'attività didattica nell'ambito dei corsi di urbanistica tenuti dall'autore presso l'ateneo fiorentino. Si propone come sussidio nello studio dei fenomeni urbani, come strumento di ricerca e come occasione per suscitare interesse negli operatori dell'urbanistica verso un approccio globale ai problemi della progettazione urbana. Il testo, preceduto da un saggio introduttivo di Antonio Acuto, esamina gli aspetti storici dallo sviluppo delle ferrovie nell'ottocento alle conseguenze di mutamento degli attuali assetti territoriali ed urbani e gli aspetti più propriamente architettonici e qualitativi, tracciando una concisa storia dell'architettura della stazione e dell'impatto nei termini di rinnovamento dell'immagine della città. I contenuti approfondiscono le questioni urbanistiche, analizzando le opzioni di progettazione urbana correntemente adottate per ridurre i conflitti funzionali e per valorizzare mutuamente gli impianti ferroviari e città.</p>
