      <abstract xml:lang="en">
        <p>This volume offers an analysis of one of the most interesting contemporary political regimes, the Singapore 'case'. This extremely small island is devoid of natural resources and surrounded by two infinitely larger countries with feelings of hostility towards it. It represents an economic and political experiment which has given birth to a substantially authoritarian, hybrid and yet ‘happy’ regime, and which has started a rapid development process on whose results its legitimacy is based. Today, Singapore emerges in the world economy as the successful global city to which country leaders around the world look with admiration. However, its extraordinary economic successes have been explicitly accompanied by rather invasive and illiberal policies, thus posing a serious challenge to liberal and democratic Western political systems which, at present, are struggling to provide actual solutions for the same fields of intervention.</p>

        <p>Il volume offre un’analisi di uno dei regimi politici contemporanei più interessanti, il ‘caso’ Singapore. Quest’isola, estremamente piccola, priva di risorse naturali e circondata da due paesi infinitamente più grandi e a lei ostili, rappresenta un esperimento economico e politico che ha dato luogo a un regime ibrido sostanzialmente autoritario, ma dal ‘volto sorridente’, e che ha avviato un vertiginoso processo di sviluppo sui cui risultati fonda la sua legittimazione. E oggi, Singapore emerge nell’economica mondiale come la global city di successo a cui guardano con ammirazione i leader dei paesi di tutto il mondo.
Tuttavia, i suoi straordinari successi economici sono stati esplicitamente accompagnati da politiche piuttosto invasive e illiberali, comportando di fatto una grave sfida ai sistemi politici occidentali di stampo liberal-democratico che, attualmente, stentano a dare soluzioni concrete nei medesimi campi di intervento.
