Town planning entails the complex task of studying the habitat in its variegated aspects, with the objective of introducing functional transformations in response to the demands of the community. Since it is an experimental discipline, however, methods of approach and elaboration can be very different. This book represents the synthesis of the degree theses produced in the Department of Town and Territorial Planning of the University of Florence between 2000 and 2004, selected with a view to achieving a significant overview of the various issues and disciplinary areas. The volume thus addresses topical questions such as the protection of the historic identity, the rethinking of the modern city, obsolete areas and urban gaps, relational processes and spaces, sustainable development and planning, and the settlements of developing countries.

L'urbanistica ha il difficile compito di studiare l'habitat nei suoi variegati aspetti, con l'obiettivo di introdurvi le trasformazioni funzionali in riposta ai problemi della comunità. Essendo tuttavia una disciplina sperimentale, i metodi di approccio e di elaborazione possono essere fortemente differenziati fra loro. Il libro raccoglie le sintesi di alcune tesi di laurea rappresentative delle varie problematiche e aree disciplinari esistenti, elaborate nel Dipartimento di Urbanistica e pianificazione del territorio dell'Università di Firenze dal 2000 al 2004. Vengono esplorati temi di grande attualità quali la tutela dell'identità storica, il ripensamento della città attuale, delle aree obsolete e dei vuoti urbani, i percorsi e gli spazi di relazione, lo sviluppo sostenibile e la pianificazione, e gli insediamenti dei paesi in via di sviluppo.
