The volume presents the results of two Architectural Design Workshops of the third year of the Faculty of Architecture of Florence (years 2003-2005) on the theme “Urban parts and the buildings of institutions”. The students were asked to hypothesise urban expansions in three peripheral areas in the cities of Florence, Pisa and Livorno; the works were therefore carried out in close collaboration between teachers and students, with the spirit of a true “laboratory”. At the basis of the reasons for the project is the challenge of knowing how to approach a specific consideration of places that takes into account the specific values and signs that have accompanied the evolution of cities and architecture over the centuries.
