        <p>Recovering Bacon’s valorization of error can shed light on his epistemology as a whole, and even on that of research more generally. Bacon is often known popularly as having established a scientific method to direct inquiry efficiently towards reliable knowledge and useful ends. In the period, however, experimentation already entailed husbanding resources and serving the useful ends of household management. By contrast, Bacon extended the length and sophistication of investigation in ways that deferred immediate use and that advised investigators to pursue bizarre and often resource-intensive approaches. Bacon supported what we would now call curiosity-driven research by encouraging investigators to wander in the pathways of error. Notably, however, he discussed error not in his interpretation of the myth of Daedalus, whose labyrinth commonly symbolized error, but rather in his reading of the myth of Proteus in which the investigator provokes matter (Proteus) into a state of error so that matter and its investigator might struggle together. For Bacon, rather than something to be escaped by following the clue of Ariadne, error was a state in which the human had to be immersed. In this way, Bacons reading of the myth of Proteus did gender experimentation, as Carolyn Merchant has argued, but not in the ways that Merchant claimed. By rejecting the useful and efficient forms of experimentation practiced by women within the household, Bacon made experimentation into a gendered, ongoing struggle through the valorization of error.</p>

A scientific method directing reliable and useful inquiry is often attributed to Bacon. Yet household experimentation in his period was already efficient and useful. Research as Error</p><p rend="h3 ParaOverride-2">1.1 Vital Matter, Gender, and Experimental Labor</p><p rend="text"><hi>This essay </hi><hi>explores erring as a valorized epistemic tool in the early </hi><hi>modern effort for humans to come to grips with inconstancy.</hi><hi> In so doing, it engages long-standing debates concerning the degree to</hi><hi> which science attempts to dominate the world, and relatedly, the</hi><hi> degree to which scientific rhetoric seeks to fix knowledge into</hi><hi> normative taxonomies and methods. These debates, particularly in the discussion</hi><hi> of Francis Bacon’s treatment of errant nature in his</hi><hi> interpretation of the myth of Proteus, have involved feminist arguments</hi><hi> concerning Bacon’s view of experiment as a masculine</hi><hi> torture or constraint of a passive, feminized Nature. In this</hi><hi> essay, I suggest that such views of science’s attempt to</hi><hi> dominate through fixity and constraint are based in misconceptions of</hi><hi> the significance of the mechanical arts in the Scientific Revolution</hi><hi>. With “new science” and “mechanical philosophy” treated as synonyms in</hi><hi> these older debates, experimental science is seen from a perspective</hi><hi> that naturalizes mechanical objectivity and mathematical certainty as presumed objectives</hi><hi> in science. However, the recent history of alchemy, vitalism, and</hi><hi> perfective views of nature decenters the presumed dominance of mechanical</hi><hi> philosophy in the history of experimentalism. Thus, other values can</hi><hi> come to the fore, such as adaptive emergence, immersion, and</hi><hi> transformation both of experimenter and of the experimental object. These</hi><hi>, rather, that fixity, clarity, and certainty, are the experimental values</hi><hi> at play in Bacon’s interpretation of Proteus, and in</hi><hi> Bacon’s somewhat idiosyncratic interpretation of the myth, they are</hi><hi> related to error as a valorized epistemic stance. Bacon, I</hi><hi> argue here, distinguished error as a significant stage in the</hi><hi> human intervention into nature via experiment. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Erring, or continual departure</hi><hi> from a predetermined pathway, was deployed both in the quick</hi><hi>-changing, adaptive manipulation of metamorphic nature through experiment as well</hi><hi> as in the development of purposefully tentative, open-ended, and</hi><hi> haphazard forms of inscription of the period, such as the</hi><hi> experimental essay and the wish list (Keller 2014, 2020a). </hi><hi>As Pamela Smith has discussed, a “cycle of trial, failure, replication, and a responsive, adaptive approach to unexpected outcomes</hi><hi>,” is a central experimental epistemology of the period (Smith 2020</hi><hi>). Feminist science scholars have championed error as an epistemic stance</hi><hi> premised upon deviancy rather than upon an adherence to norms</hi><hi> (Thylstrup 2020, 194). However, in highlighting error in the work</hi><hi> of Francis Bacon, I do not mean to act as</hi><hi> an apologist for his gender politics. In fact, I ultimately</hi><hi> agree with scholars such as Carolyn Merchant (Merchant 1980) that</hi><hi> Bacon intended to gender experimental practice, by (in his view</hi><hi>) elevating experiment from a domestic, heterosocial practice to an act</hi><hi> of power and to an endeavor of public significance on</hi><hi> a par with the imperial conquest of territory. He gendered</hi><hi> experiment, however, not by casting it as the mechanical domination</hi><hi> of passive Nature. Rather, immersive, transformative error that provoked Nature</hi><hi> into ever more lively metamorphoses could serve a gendering role</hi><hi>. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Aiming for error was itself a way to distinguish between</hi><hi> the common household manipulation of nature and the more sophisticated</hi><hi>, risk-taking, and resource-intensive forms of experimentation that Bacon</hi><hi> intended primarily for epistemic ends rather than for use. Instead</hi><hi> of the shortcuts, clear directions, and claims to efficacy that</hi><hi> one might find, for example, in the genre of the</hi><hi> domestic recipe (Leong 2018), Bacon developed a labyrinthine approach that</hi><hi> indulged lengthy, circuitous and oblique routes, multiple iterations, and a</hi><hi>n intensive consumption of intellectual, material, and temporal resources, that, in the end, only ever </hi><hi>arrived at knowledge of a probabilistic sort (Cf. Werrett 2019). </hi><hi>Labyrinths were luxuries. In his bid for greater support for </hi><hi>experimental knowledge Bacon made the case that funds were a </hi><hi>necessity for those who “not only wandered [</hi><hi rend="italic">pererrant</hi><hi>] in those </hi><hi>of nature, but also opened a path in the labyrinths </hi><hi>of art” (Bacon 1623, 71). </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Thus, distinct from the pressing </hi><hi>needs of useful, household experimentation, Bacon identified a zone of </hi><hi>experimental investigation into nature that was intensive in resources, time, </hi><hi>and effort, which did not aim to exit the </hi><hi>process of experimentation as efficiently as possible </hi><hi>in order to yield useful results. Rather, it separated experimental labor from its product, involuting effort in cycles</hi><hi> of investigation which resulted not in an exit to use</hi><hi>, but in further investigation, in a manner comparable to the</hi><hi> medieval folk etymology of the labyrinth as “</hi><hi rend="italic">labor intus</hi><hi>” or</hi><hi> inner labor (Doob 1990, 97). The chymical </hi><hi rend="italic">laboratorium </hi><hi>of the</hi><hi> period always aimed to produce simultaneously both knowledge and power</hi><hi>. The labyrinth, by contrast, had no [immediate] use. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon, I</hi><hi> argue, distinguished stages of experimental investigation. He thus demarcated some</hi><hi> experimental labor specifically to wandering around in the pursuit of errant nature. Error serves Bacon </hi><hi>as a means of freeing investigation from imperatives to produce </hi><hi>useful, timely, and certain results. In a manner that adumbrates </hi><hi>basic science research today (in contrast to technology), Bacon identifies </hi><hi>a realm of intensive, slow, difficult, iterative, cyclical, uncertain, unending, </hi><hi>and fundamentally not immediately useful experimental labor. This is the </hi><hi>path of erring in knowledge.</hi></p><p rend="h3">1.2 Wandering as a Strategic Deferral of Truth</p><p rend="text"><hi>As embodied by the classical labyrinth, </hi><hi>error in the European tradition was never entirely a negative </hi><hi>phenomenon. Knights in romances such as Spenser’s </hi><hi rend="italic">Faerie Queene </hi><hi>had to find their way out of the Labyrinth of Error, but what enabled them to do so </hi><hi>in the first place was their status as a knight </hi><hi rend="italic">errant</hi><hi>, that is, one that broke free from a predictable </hi><hi>place or path in life in order to quest further </hi><hi>afield. Thus, error is not simply a lie or the </hi><hi>antonym of truth.</hi><hi rend="notes_number _idGenCharOverride-1"><hi xml:id="footnote-006-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-006">1</ref></hi></hi><hi> Rather, as a personally transformative wandering </hi><hi>through complexity, error “has never been wholly determined by an </hi><hi>epistemological structure of truth but has always enjoyed a certain </hi><hi>conceptual independence” (Thylstrup 2020, 194). </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>David William Bates has seen </hi><hi>this orientation towards error as particularly characteristic of the eighteenth-</hi><hi>century Enlightenment’s founding of a “probabilistic process of discovery” </hi><hi>and of “novel epistemologies” in contrast to the seventeenth-century Scientific Revolution (Bates 2002, vii). Bates argued that the</hi><hi> eighteenth century saw a “frank admission that error is an</hi><hi> important aspect of human understanding,” an admission that allowed for</hi><hi> an infinite deferral of truth, thus continually expanding the horizon</hi><hi> of knowledge and forming an ideology of unending progress based</hi><hi> on the continual error and future discovery (Bates 2002, ix</hi><hi>). However, work on probabilism and the nature of facts in</hi><hi> the seventeenth century shed light on the valorization of error</hi><hi> in this earlier era (Shapiro 1983, 1994).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>As I have</hi><hi> argued elsewhere, the probabilistic deferral of ever arriving at a</hi><hi> final destination for knowledge typifies the approach of Francis Bacon</hi><hi>. Here, I reinterpret that probabilistic approach as one that valorizes error, in contrast to many views of Bacon</hi><hi>. Julianne Werlin describes the late nineteenth-century disappointment with Bacon</hi><hi> when readers began to understand that he had constructed “an</hi><hi> ingenious maze of words that was not, in the end</hi><hi>, so different from the intellectual systems he denounced” (Werlin 2015</hi><hi>, 236). According to such critics, things were straightforward in the</hi><hi> world and they become twisted through sophistic intricacies. Werlin has</hi><hi> recuperated Bacon’s labyrinthine rhetoric and defended “the potential for</hi><hi> failure, for error and misunderstanding” as occupying “an important place</hi><hi> in Bacon’s thought.” Like Werlin, but from a rather</hi><hi> different lens, I see error as a strategy that Bacon</hi><hi> deploys in order to effect a multi-perspectival, adaptive approach</hi><hi> to an inconstant world. Bacon discusses erring as a desirable</hi><hi> state to provoke in nature and to enter into as</hi><hi> an inquirer. Such errant pathways to knowledge differ markedly from</hi><hi> the notion of method (or “path through”) so often erroneously</hi><hi> highlighted in the work of Bacon.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon often stressed the</hi><hi> need to lengthen and complicate investigation. In</hi><hi rend="italic"> Valerius Terminus </hi><hi>(</hi><hi>circa 1603), he contended that, in contrast to anticipations of </hi><hi>the mind, senses were more reliable “not because they err </hi><hi>not, but because the use of sense in discovering of </hi><hi>knowledge is for the most part not immediate” (Bacon 1857, </hi><hi>“Valerius Terminus” in </hi><hi rend="italic">The Works of Frances Bacon</hi><hi>, vol. 3, 244). In the </hi><hi rend="italic">Novum</hi><hi rend="italic"> organum, </hi><hi>he described how a very powerful form of experiment</hi><hi> was that of the “alternation and ups and downs” of</hi><hi> six other modes of operations in natural bodies. Such a</hi><hi> “series or chain of alternations of this kind [. . .] is a</hi><hi> thing very hard to grasp but very powerful for producing</hi><hi> works. However, men are prey to and held fast by</hi><hi> their colossal impatience both in the investigation and practice of</hi><hi> things of this kind, even though this is like the</hi><hi> thread of the labyrinth as far as major works are</hi><hi> concerned” (Bacon 2004, “Novum Organum,”</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>441).</hi> <hi>In other words</hi><hi>, impatience held men back from applying the extremely time-intensive</hi><hi> chain of experiments with which they might bind nature, even</hi><hi> though this chain could thread them through the labyrinth. This</hi><hi> attitude explains one posthumous anecdote associated with Bacon: “The lord</hi><hi> St. Alban, who was not over-hasty to raise theories</hi><hi>, but proceeded slowly by experiments, was wont to say to</hi><hi> some philosophers, who would not go his pace, ‘Gentlemen, nature</hi><hi> is a labyrinth, in which the very haste you move</hi><hi> with, will make you lose your way’” (Bacon 1859, “Apophthegms</hi><hi> from Baconiana” in </hi><hi rend="italic">The Works of Francis Bacon</hi><hi> vol. VII, 177). Bacon worked to</hi><hi> delay investigators and to make them circle about the object</hi><hi> of inquiry in multiple ways.</hi></p><p rend="h3">1.3 Clues and Labyrinths</p><p rend="text"><hi>In </hi><hi rend="italic">Science and the Secrets of Nature</hi><hi>,</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>William Eamon </hi><hi>argued that Francis Bacon and his followers developed an epistemology </hi><hi>of the “hunter, who follows clues to an unseen quarry” (</hi><hi>Eamon 1994, 9). Eamon’s argument was inspired by two </hi><hi>articles about clues published by Carlo Ginzburg (Ginzburg 1979, 1980)</hi><hi>. Although Ginzburg noted that hunting for clues was an ancient practice, he also suggested </hi><hi>that following clues offers the roots of a modern “scientific </hi><hi>paradigm.” Eamon argued that what typified Bacon’s epistemology—and </hi><hi>that adopted by his followers in the Royal Society—were </hi><hi>such clues or guiding threads leading out of the thickets </hi><hi>of error. However, seeing the following of clues as a </hi><hi>novel early modern intervention in scientific method undercuts the longstanding </hi><hi>history of the clue. It also pays insufficient attention to </hi><hi>new ways that labyrinthine error appealed as a way of </hi><hi>knowing. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Since the ninth century, a “clue” or “clew” meant </hi><hi>a ball of thread; since the fourteenth, this “clue” was </hi><hi>often used to denote a thread that might lead one </hi><hi>out of a labyrinth of error, based on such popular </hi><hi>accounts of the Cretan myth as Bersuire’s </hi><hi rend="italic">Ovidius moralizatus </hi><hi>in which Daedalus advises the use of string to unfold (</hi><hi rend="italic">explicare</hi><hi>) or unravel (</hi><hi rend="italic">extricare</hi><hi>) the deceptive passages or </hi><hi rend="italic">ambages </hi><hi>of the labyrinth. The unbroken, unravelling clue</hi><hi> led the inquirer step by step from ignorance and doubt</hi><hi> into certain knowledge (Keller 2020b). For centuries, the labyrinth </hi><hi>co-existed alongside the clue as an epistemological structure that escaped the binary fixities of truth </hi><hi>and falsehood (Thylstrup 2020, 194). Different approaches to knowledge could </hi><hi>valorize the clue as an efficient means out of error </hi><hi>or could valorize the labyrinth itself as a remarkable, multiplex </hi><hi>work of art. The position one took related to one’</hi><hi>s perspective upon the labyrinth, which was “convertible and relative,” </hi><hi>changing its nature dynamically with changes in perspective (Doob 1990, </hi><hi>1). As Penelope Doob has written, for “maze-treaders” “vision </hi><hi>ahead and behind is severely constricted and fragmented.” On the </hi><hi>other hand, “maze-viewers, who see the pattern whole, from </hi><hi>above or in a diagram are dazzled by its complex </hi><hi>artistry” (Doob 1990, 1). The ability of a labyrinth to </hi><hi>lead one into error could thus be a praiseworthy quality </hi><hi>to be much admired. George Sandys described the “Labyrinth” at </hi><hi>Alexandria (which he claimed was the model for Daedalus’ at </hi><hi>Crete) as “full of winding paths as darke as hell, </hi><hi>and rooms within one another, having many doors, to confound </hi><hi>the memory, and distract the intention; leading into inexplicable errour [</hi><hi>. . .] not possible to thred, or ever to get out without a conducter” (Sandys 1615, 113).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon deploys the</hi><hi> trope of the labyrinth many times throughout his writings. Occasionally</hi><hi> he does so in ways that seem to promise the</hi><hi> offering of a clue. In particular, the clue appears to</hi><hi> be a method of investigation that leads through the woods</hi><hi> of particular experience towards more universal and certain axioms. In</hi><hi> the </hi><hi rend="italic">Novum Organum</hi><hi>, he criticizes those who entirely erred (“</hi><hi rend="italic">aberrauerint</hi><hi>”), “either</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>by</hi><hi> leaving and deserting experience entirely, or by getting caught up</hi><hi> in it and running up and down as in a</hi><hi> labyrinth; whereas a properly established order leads by a direct</hi><hi> road through the woods of experience to the open ground</hi><hi> of axioms” (Bacon 2004, “Novum Organum,” 130–1). The title</hi><hi> of his early and abandoned unpublished manuscript, </hi><hi rend="italic">Filum Labyrinthi sive</hi><hi rend="italic"> Formula Inquisitionis</hi><hi>,</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>promises a precise textual technology to lead inquiry out of the </hi><hi>labyrinth of error through a process of decrypting nature. Like </hi><hi>a few of Bacon’s other works, this fragment is </hi><hi>addressed “ad filios,” that is, to the true sons of </hi><hi>learning, or a population of adepts (Jalobeanu 2008, 205). However, </hi><hi>upon closer examination, Bacon’s promise of transmitting a clue </hi><hi>to his select audience proves to be a red herring, as this </hi><hi>text, like so many others, was left in a fragmentary </hi><hi>form. Rather than clues, what Bacon actually offers are errant </hi><hi>forms of knowledge.</hi></p><p rend="h3">1.4 Fragments as Errant Forms of Knowledge</p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon did not offer clues as constricted shortcuts to </hi><hi>knowledge that offered efficient, certain pathways out of a labyrinth </hi><hi>of error and into truth. Instead, he loosened knowledge in </hi><hi>provisional, incipient, and fragmentary forms. These allowed knowledge greater latitude, </hi><hi>in terms of its temporal framework, in terms of means </hi><hi>of participating and of numbers of participants, and in terms </hi><hi>of risk-taking, speculation and an expanded conceptualization of possibility.</hi><hi> He did this not least in the </hi><hi rend="italic">Valerius Terminus </hi><hi>itself. He ingeniously composed</hi><hi> the </hi><hi rend="italic">Valerius Terminus of the Interpretation of Nature: with the</hi><hi rend="italic"> Annotations of Hermes Stella</hi><hi>,</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>as the work of a </hi><hi>pseudonymous author (Serjeantson 2017). This endowed his text with an </hi><hi>air of great wisdom and authority, as the work of </hi><hi>an ancient sage guiding the ignorant into the greatest mysteries.</hi><hi> This was precisely the knowledge dynamic upon which the concept </hi><hi>of a clue was based; an authoritative adept transmitted a </hi><hi>secure path of knowledge to an initiate. Bacon’s choice </hi><hi>of pseudonym, </hi><hi rend="italic">Valerius Terminus</hi><hi>, connoted definition, fixity, and certainty, as </hi><hi>a reference to the ancient god of the boundary, </hi><hi rend="italic">Terminus</hi><hi>. </hi><hi>Yet, this text that promised such defined access to knowledge </hi><hi>did not pass on an unbroken clue to its readers, </hi><hi>as it was merely fragmentary. These fragments played upon the </hi><hi>period desire and curiosity to see ancient lacunae of knowledge </hi><hi>filled in. In this case, these lacunae were not actually </hi><hi>lost pieces of knowledge, but were entirely constructed by Bacon. In short, </hi><hi>he cut the ancient clue into fragments in order to </hi><hi>destroy the bounds of ancient, defined, discipline and authority and </hi><hi>to open empty spaces for knowledge to come. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon deployed </hi><hi>the aesthetics of ancient fragmentary manuscripts in order to create </hi><hi>lacunae in his account of knowledge. In so doing, he </hi><hi>was clearing space for future work that remained unwritten because </hi><hi>it was not yet known. Already in this early writing, </hi><hi>he anticipated that he would not live to see the </hi><hi>completion of the great future work he was envisioning. </hi></p><p rend="quotation_b">For the time present, in case I should be prevented by death to propound and reveal this new light as I purpose, yet I may at least give some awaking note, both of the wants in man’s present condition, and the nature of the supplies to be wished; though for mine own part neither do I much build upon my present anticipations, neither do I think ourselves yet learned or wise enough to wish reasonably: for as it asks some sense, to make a wish not absurd (Bacon “Valerius Terminus,” 233).</p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon gave the text the form of an initiatory </hi><hi>guide proffered by an ancient sage, whose guiding thread to </hi><hi>certain knowledge had been broken by time. In reality, he </hi><hi>never possessed such a clue. Rather than clues to knowledge, </hi><hi>he could only offer hand-waving or uncertain hints at future knowledge (what he calls </hi><hi>an “awaking note”); at this early stage, he did not </hi><hi>even feel himself “learned or wise enough to wish reasonably.”</hi></p><p rend="h2 ParaOverride-3">2. Bacon on Proteus and the Torture of Nature</p><p rend="h3 ParaOverride-2">2.1 Liberty, Error, and Bonds</p><p rend="text"><hi>As Bacon had </hi><hi>no direct path to offer to truth, he sought to </hi><hi>fill in the gaps with various stopgaps. He sought to </hi><hi>delay and extend inquiry over time. Multiplying approaches to knowledge </hi><hi>and delaying the moment when the labyrinth was exited might </hi><hi>allow a greater degree of knowledge to be accessed than </hi><hi>was possible when specious forms of truth were rapidly sought. </hi><hi>Bacon thus broadened the straightforward line of inquiry or clue </hi><hi>into a multiplex approach that struggled with a continually transforming nature, </hi><hi>as he discussed in his interpretation of the myth of </hi><hi>Proteus in his </hi><hi rend="italic">Wisdom of the Ancients. </hi><hi>His interpretation of </hi><hi>the myth treated human intervention into matter as a lengthy </hi><hi>process with multiple stages.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>In Bacon’s re-telling of </hi><hi>the myth, every day Proteus would “count his flock of </hi><hi>seals and then go to sleep. And if anyone wanted </hi><hi>his help in any matter, the only way was first </hi><hi>to secure his hands with handcuffs, and then to bind </hi><hi>him with chains. Whereupon he on his part, in order </hi><hi>to get free, would turn himself into all manner of </hi><hi>strange shapes—fire, water, wild beasts, etc., till at last </hi><hi>he returned again to his original shape” (Bacon 1858, “Translation </hi><hi>of the de Sapientia Veterum,” vol. 6, 725). Proteus was </hi><hi>matter, according to Bacon, and Proteus with his flocks can </hi><hi>be interpreted as “the universe with its several species according </hi><hi>to their ordinary frame and structure,” that is, “the face </hi><hi>of matter unconstrained and at liberty, with its flock of </hi><hi>materiate creatures.” A skillful “Servant of Nature” could “bring force </hi><hi>to bear on matter” and “vex it and drive it </hi><hi>to extremities” until it transforms “itself into strange shapes, passing </hi><hi>from one change to another till it has gone through </hi><hi>the whole cycle and finished the period; when, if the </hi><hi>force be continued, it returns at last to itself”</hi><hi rend="CharOverride-1"> </hi><hi>(</hi><hi>Bacon 1858, 726). </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>The question is how much, in his interpretation of this myth, </hi><hi>Bacon valorized the act of struggle in experiment. Did Bacon </hi><hi>seek to quell struggle as soon as possible, aiming to </hi><hi>silence and dominate matter? Or, did Bacon see mutual struggle </hi><hi>with Proteus itself as the process through which knowledge could </hi><hi>be gained? This question has become embroiled in a debate </hi><hi>between Peter Pesic and Carolyn Merchant (and other feminist science </hi><hi>scholars) concerning the extent to which experimental science should be </hi><hi>identified as a violent and misogynist form of domination of </hi><hi>Nature. For Merchant, wrestling with Proteus aims to dominate Nature </hi><hi>(gendered female) and render her passive, an interpretation that rests upon a view of Bacon as a</hi><hi> proponent of mechanical philosophy. Pesic disagrees with Merchant, as well</hi><hi> as with Evelyn Fox Keller and Sandra Harding on this</hi><hi> question. He argues that feminist science scholars paint too stark</hi><hi> of a divide between an active male experimenter and the</hi><hi> passive, female object of experiment, that Nature is also powerful</hi><hi>, and that the struggle between Man and Nature also transforms Man.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>My interpretation</hi><hi> of the myth finds that both Pesic and Merchant are</hi><hi> correct in some respects and incorrect in others; neither, I</hi><hi> argue, attend sufficiently carefully to the role of error in</hi><hi> Bacon’s formulation of Proteus nor to the various stages</hi><hi> that appear in this myth (Pesic 1999, 2000, 2001, 2008</hi><hi>, 2010; Merchant 1980; Fox Keller 1985; Harding 1986). My interpretation</hi><hi> differentiates between stages and ends of experimentation in ways that</hi><hi> Pesic and Merchant do not. The stage that is most</hi><hi> greatly valorized for experimentation, I argue, is that of error</hi><hi>.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>In </hi><hi rend="italic">Wisdom of the Ancients</hi><hi>,</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>Bacon did not refer </hi><hi>explicitly to error. However, his account of Proteus there and elsewhere maps onto many other discussions in </hi><hi>which he regularly differentiated between nature in three states: free, </hi><hi>in error, and in bonds. Across many works, Bacon likewise </hi><hi>distinguished the history of nature of three kinds, that is:</hi><hi> nature in her ordinary course, nature erring, and nature wrought.</hi><hi rend="notes_number CharOverride-2"><hi xml:id="footnote-005-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-005">2</ref></hi></hi><hi> The first, which involved no manual</hi><hi> intervention or experiment, he argued, commonly served as the basis</hi><hi> upon which axioms were falsely developed. Counterintuitively, nature in error</hi><hi> served greater epistemic ends; such error could either occur naturally</hi><hi>, through matter running into the “</hi>violence of impediments<hi>” on its</hi><hi> own, or through the human vexing of nature; “For like</hi><hi> as a Mans disposition is neuer well knowen, till hee</hi><hi> be crossed, nor </hi><hi rend="italic">Proteus </hi><hi>ever changed shapes, till hee was straightened and</hi><hi> held fast: so the passages and variations of Nature cannot</hi><hi> appeare so fully in the libertie of Nature, as in</hi><hi> the trialls and vexations of Art.”</hi><hi rend="notes_number CharOverride-2"><hi xml:id="footnote-004-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-004">3</ref></hi></hi> <hi>Attempting to hold</hi><hi> nature fast with “handcuffs” as though she were Proteus did</hi><hi> not, however, lead to the fixation of knowledge, but rather</hi><hi> to continual metamorphosis as nature struggled to escape this hold</hi><hi>. The series of transformations that ensued revealed otherwise hidden “passages and variations.” </hi><hi>It was a means to artificially induce the sorts of </hi><hi>changes through which marvels appeared. Thus, while pretergenerations are metamorphoses </hi><hi>of nature that occur naturally, experimental history records metamorphoses that </hi><hi>are only revealed with the aid of the arts (Bacon </hi><hi>2004, “Parasceve,” 463). </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Merchant applied the three states of nature (</hi><hi>at liberty, in error, and in bonds) to Bacon’s </hi><hi>Proteus myth of the </hi><hi rend="italic">Wisdom of the Ancients</hi><hi>. However, in </hi><hi>my view, she conflates vexing nature with binding nature, whereas </hi><hi>these are two separate stages.</hi></p><p rend="quotation_b">Bacon’s three states of nature were implicitly reflected in the 1609 Proteus myth […]. Here Proteus (matter) ‘unconstrained and at liberty’ or ‘the universe with its several species according to their ordinary frame and structure’ (i.e. nature at liberty); matter which ‘turn[s] and transform[s] itself into strange shapes’ is nature in error; while the ‘force [brought to bear on matter] by vex[ing]’ it is nature in bonds (Merchant 2013, 557, footnote 14).</p><p rend="text_NOindent">Elsewhere, Merchant allocates Bacon’s Pan, Proteus and Prometheus myths separately “to frame his idea of the three states of nature (free, erring, and in bonds)” (Merchant 2008, 760). </p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon’s interpretation of the Proteus myth does</hi><hi> in fact implicitly cover three states. However, what Merchant does</hi><hi> not acknowledge is that vexing nature is a process that</hi><hi> starts at the beginning of Bacon’s treatment of nature</hi><hi> in error, and as a means to bring nature into</hi><hi> the state of error. The three states that appear in</hi><hi> the myth according to my interpretation are nature at liberty</hi><hi>, vexed (that is in error; a state that can be</hi><hi> brought about either naturally through the violence and impediments of</hi><hi> matter or through human experiment), and in bonds (that is</hi><hi>, held fast through continued force in a single, artificial state</hi><hi>). Bacon differentiates the stages of vexing nature and binding nature</hi><hi> when he says that those who approached Proteus would “first</hi><hi>” “secure his hands with handcuffs” and “then” “bind him with</hi><hi> chains” (cited above). The handcuffs meant pushing matter to extremities</hi><hi> in order to provoke motion; binding meant quelling matter’s</hi><hi> motions through artificial force.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>The reason why Merchant conflates vexing</hi><hi> with binding is that Merchant’s interpretation of Bacon rested</hi><hi> on the assumption that Bacon viewed Nature mechanically and that</hi><hi> the goal of experiment was to dissect a dead, passive</hi><hi>, experimental object. As a result, her interpretation of Bacon’s</hi><hi> myth of Proteus does not engage the valorization of error</hi><hi> as a way of visualizing vital processes of metamorphosis. The</hi><hi> goal of vexing nature was to reveal the “passages and</hi><hi> variations” that occur already invisibly within the labyrinths of nature</hi><hi>. Experiment is thus, as it were, a process of adaptive</hi><hi> labyrinth construction in real time. As matter attempts to move</hi><hi> one way or another, the experimenter throws up another barrier</hi><hi>, thus sticking fast to matter in its twists and turns</hi><hi>. As those intricate adaptations to the experimental setup are made responsively to observed processes</hi><hi> in nature, the complex structures that they trace and reveal</hi><hi> build an observable labyrinth. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>It is difficult to understand why</hi><hi> matter that had gone through a series of transformations should</hi><hi> of necessity return to its beginning, natural state when force</hi><hi> is maintained (as cited above, “when if the force be continued, it returns at last to itself”). In fact, I argue, Bacon does not say</hi><hi> this. Rather, his original Latin states that it only appears</hi><hi> to return to its original state (“</hi><hi rend="italic">quasi</hi><hi> se restituat, si</hi><hi> vis continuetur” [emphasis added]) (Bacon 1609, 52). Based on other</hi><hi> discussions of Proteus throughout Bacon’s corpus, I interpret the</hi><hi> final, fixed identity of matter that obtains when force is</hi><hi> maintained past the period of metamorphosis not as a return</hi><hi> to an original natural identity, but as an imposition of</hi><hi> an artificial state. Humans could bind nature by artificially imposing</hi><hi> a desired static form upon nature. This was the third state to which Bacon referred in his myth</hi><hi>. Nature became still again, as she had been when at</hi><hi> liberty. However, she was maintained in this stable state through</hi><hi> the forceful imposition of human power. This third state could</hi><hi> offer humans much power, but little knowledge. The apparent stability</hi><hi>, passivity, and fixity of Nature in this stage was deceptive</hi><hi>, as it required human power to maintain. </hi><hi>Such an</hi><hi> imposition of an artificial state would obscure, rather than reveal</hi><hi>, the inner passages and variations of nature. It would create</hi><hi> “a kind of alternative universe of things” (Bacon 1996, “Descriptio</hi><hi> globi intellectualis,” 100–1). Through “violent motions,” bodies “do not </hi><hi>obtain any new stable and steady consistency from them, but </hi><hi>a transient one which is always struggling to restore itself </hi><hi>and break free” (Bacon 2004, “Novum Organum,” 423). </hi></p><p rend="h3">2.2 Chymical and Mechanical Arts in Bacon’s Interpretation of Proteus</p><p rend="text"><hi>Here, Bacon steps back from one of the arguments frequently </hi><hi>made in the chymical tradition about the epistemic value of </hi><hi>experimentation. Opponents of chymistry argued that art, as a forceful </hi><hi>human intervention in nature, could not lead to knowledge about nature, but rather, knowledge of </hi><hi>art. Chymists countered that their art was not contrary to </hi><hi>nature. They distinguished </hi><hi rend="italic">chymia </hi><hi>from the mechanical arts. The latter </hi><hi>did not engage the qualities of matter and instead sought </hi><hi>to quantitatively force nature against its will; </hi><hi rend="italic">chymia</hi><hi>, by contrast, </hi><hi>perfected nature, assisting it in fulfilling its will, and merely </hi><hi>revealed its true, hidden qualities (Moran 2005, 2007). It thus </hi><hi>did not produce objects that were artificial, but rather were </hi><hi>the acme of perfected nature. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>In his discussion of Proteus, </hi><hi>Bacon engages this debate in a complicated way. Proteus, as </hi><hi>a chief personification of metamorphosis, often recurred in chymical literature. </hi><hi>However, Bacon drew on the violent struggle of the myth </hi><hi>in order to take issue with the chymical interpretation of human art</hi><hi> as assisting and perfecting Nature. </hi></p><p rend="quotation_b">But if anyone gets annoyed because I call the arts the bonds of nature when they ought rather to be considered its liberators and champions in that in some cases they allow nature to achieve its ends by reducing obstacles to order, then I reply that I do not much care for such fancy ideas and pretty words; I intend and mean only that nature, like Proteus, is forced by art to do what would not have been done without it: and it does not matter whether you call this forcing and enchaining, or assisting and perfecting (Bacon 1996, “Descriptio globi intellectualis,” 100–1).</p><p rend="text"><hi>In</hi><hi> fact, according to period debates over experimentation, it did matter</hi><hi> very much whether art was assisting and perfecting nature, or</hi><hi> going against it. By thus denying a period distinction between forcing</hi><hi> and perfecting nature, however, Bacon does not deny the epistemic</hi><hi> efficacy of experiment, nor does he attempt to replace chymical</hi><hi> means of intervening in nature with mechanical ones. Rather, he</hi><hi> pointed out that the chymical tradition also made interventions that</hi><hi> would not have occurred outside of a laboratory setting. However</hi><hi>, vexing nature in the laboratory served the purposes of rendering</hi><hi> visible those metamorphoses that also occurred when nature erred through</hi><hi> the production of monsters. These purposeful instigations of change could</hi><hi> be distinguished from the imposition of an artificial state that</hi><hi> obtained when nature was forcefully held fast; the former pertained</hi><hi> more to what were generally called the chymical arts and</hi><hi> was more epistemic, and the latter pertained more to what</hi><hi> were generally called the mechanical arts and was more operative</hi><hi>.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Thus, whereas the chymical tradition continually intertwined the search for knowledge and for</hi><hi> use, Bacon disaggregated different stages and ends of human intervention</hi><hi> into Nature. He cleared a space for what we would</hi><hi> call research or basic science, that is, an area in</hi><hi> which humans, through laboratory means, can follow nature in its</hi><hi> erring paths, without attempting immediately to apply that investigation to</hi><hi> use. Even that epistemically oriented stage of vexing nature could</hi><hi> make use of practices that were traditionally deployed for the</hi><hi> purpose of use in arts. However, in redeploying those arts</hi><hi>, Bacon’s goal at that stage was primarily epistemic. As he specified, his main aim</hi><hi> was not to bring “the several arts to greater perfection” but</hi><hi> to make “all mechanical experiments” “as streams flowing from all</hi><hi> sides into the sea of philosophy” (Bacon 2004, “Parasceve,” 465</hi><hi>). Bacon does not here differentiate the “chymical” and the “mechanical</hi><hi>” arts; “mechanical” here comprises both arts that seek to qualitatively</hi><hi> transform matter and those that seek to move matter quantitatively</hi><hi> through weight and measure. However, he did distinguish between two</hi><hi> sorts of arts, one more epistemic and one more operative</hi><hi>; these two sorts map onto traditional divisions between the chymical</hi><hi> and the mechanical arts. As arts that could most serve </hi><hi>as the “bonds and handcuffs of Proteus” he identified those </hi><hi>that transformed the substance or quality of materials by engaging </hi><hi>natural processes of change, such as “agriculture, cookery, chemistry, dyeing: </hi><hi>the manufacture of glass, enamel, sugar, gunpowder, pyrotechnics, paper and </hi><hi>the like.” In their transformation and perfection of specific materials, </hi><hi>these would have been classified by many at the time </hi><hi>as chymical processes. Of less epistemic use for the struggles </hi><hi>of Proteus, argued Bacon, were the arts that applied force </hi><hi>to bodies via what were considered at the time mechanical means; these included “</hi><hi>weaving, woodworking, building, the work of millwrights, clockmakers, and so </hi><hi>on” (Bacon 2004, “Parasceve,” 463).</hi></p><p rend="h3">2.3 The Underemphasized Role of Error in the Debate over the Torture of Nature</p><p rend="text"><hi>Neither Pesic nor the feminist authors that he criticized treat </hi><hi>error as the desirable state for knowledge production. Pesic is </hi><hi>more correct than his opponents when it comes to the </hi><hi>more mutual and active relationship between the provoker and the one being brought to </hi><hi>a state of error during the struggle with Proteus. Nature </hi><hi>is a powerful opponent with which the human must struggle. </hi><hi>However, he is also not fully correct on this score, </hi><hi>in at least three ways. First, based on Bacon’s </hi><hi>interpretation of the myth, at issue is not just that </hi><hi>human and nature must heroically struggle together. It is rather </hi><hi>that the human inquirer must adopt an erring approach in </hi><hi>order to keep up with an erring Nature. Furthermore, the </hi><hi>language that Bacon chose to describe the interaction of Man </hi><hi>and Nature was more oppositional than it had to be. </hi><hi>Bacon explicitly elected to deploy an idea of vexation and </hi><hi>force rather than assistance, liberation, and perfection. Finally, in the </hi><hi>case of the final stage of Nature held fast, Bacon </hi><hi>delineates a relationship between human and nature that does dominate Nature more than Pesic </hi><hi>admits by violently fixing matter into a stable, artificial form </hi><hi>for human use.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>More recent interpreters of Bacon likewise undercut </hi><hi>the role of error in his view of experiment. Dana </hi><hi>Jalobeanu, for example, discusses Bacon’s myth of Proteus without </hi><hi>raisi</hi>raising the issue of error <hi>(Jalobeanu 2015). Sophie Weeks, rather than emphasizing the role of error in the myth of</hi><hi> Proteus, stresses the role of the clue in Bacon’s</hi><hi> version of the myth of Daedalus, which is then extrapolated</hi><hi> from a discussion of mechanical arts to a discussion of</hi><hi> experiment in general. According to Bacon, Daedalus’s simultaneous building</hi><hi> of the Labyrinth and invention of the clue symbolized how</hi><hi> “the mechanical arts” “have power for the most part to</hi><hi> dissolve their own spell” (Bacon 1905,</hi><hi rend="italic"> De sapientia veterum</hi><hi>,</hi><hi> 843). Weeks concludes that through the “interpretation of the Daedalus fable, Bacon explains why mechanics plays such a</hi><hi> significant role in inquiry. The difference between nature free and</hi><hi> nature constrained by art (mechanics) is that whereas the former</hi><hi> affords no clue to inquiry, mechanical contrivances are themselves clues</hi><hi>” (Weeks 2008, 138). However, Bacon’s identification of Daedalus’ discovery</hi><hi> of a clue out of a labyrinth with mechanics does</hi><hi> not necessarily mean that mechanics provides the clue for the</hi><hi> unravelling of nature, but only for the unravelling of mechanical</hi><hi> things. They do not hold similar power over Nature whose</hi><hi> labyrinths are far more subtle.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>When it comes to knowing</hi><hi> multiplex nature, the pertinent myth is not Daedalus, but Proteus</hi><hi>. In Bacon’s interpretation of that myth, we find no clue out of the labyrinth, but </hi><hi>rather, an epistemically powerful deployment of error itself. Weeks’ relation </hi><hi>of the Daedalus myth to a contrast between nature free </hi><hi>and nature constrained ignores Bacon’s third category of nature </hi><hi>in error. It thus also overrides the distinction Bacon draws </hi><hi>between vexing nature for epistemic ends and constraining nature in </hi><hi>order to impose an artificial form upon it for human </hi><hi>use (primarily in the mechanical arts).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>It is not surprising </hi><hi>that Weeks does not relate Daedalus to nature in error </hi><hi>because Bacon does not do so—and that is a </hi><hi>very surprising move on his part. Daedalus’ labyrinth had long symbolized error, a relationship canonized by </hi><hi>classical sources such as the descriptions of Daedalus’ labyrinth by </hi><hi>Ovid and Virgil.</hi><hi rend="notes_number _idGenCharOverride-1"><hi xml:id="footnote-003-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-003">4</ref></hi></hi><hi> Despite his extensive development of the </hi><hi>idea of “nature in error” across many works, Bacon does </hi><hi>not mention error in relation to Daedalus (Bacon, “De Sapientia </hi><hi>Veterum,” 843). Instead, Bacon interpolates error into the myth of </hi><hi>Proteus, rather than into the myth of Daedalus, where it properly belongs. </hi><hi>This surprising location of error serves as a rejection of </hi><hi>the ways that the myth of Daedalus more typically functions </hi><hi>in relation to knowledge, that is, as symbolizing the straightforward </hi><hi>following of clues out of a labyrinth of error. The </hi><hi>myth of Proteus has no clue, only an immersive and </hi><hi>adaptive struggle. Rather than following a clue out of the </hi><hi>labyrinth, Bacon redeploys the twisting and turning ways of the </hi><hi>labyrinth into its own epistemic approach, personified by a vexed </hi><hi>Proteus.</hi></p><p rend="h2">3. Handcuffing Proteus as Experiments off the Beaten Path</p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon’s idiosyncratic interpretation of these common myths sought to </hi><hi>differentiate his approach to experiment from approaches of his time </hi><hi>and to push experimental efforts off the beaten path. The “</hi><hi>handcuffs” of the myth meant, according to Bacon, pushing nature </hi><hi>to an extremity. This aiming for extremes is apparent in </hi><hi>an example he gave of “a handcuffing this Proteus of nature” that was an experiment of which, he claimed</hi><hi>, “no man has yet made trial.” This was “close distillation</hi><hi>,” the prime example that Bacon offered of the “</hi><hi rend="italic">sortes</hi><hi>”</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>or “Chances of Experiment.” This form of experimenting was “irrational and as it were mad.” It purposefully aimed</hi><hi> to depart from commonsensical approaches to experimentation since the wonders</hi><hi> (</hi><hi rend="italic">magnalia</hi><hi>) of nature typically “lie out of the common roads</hi><hi> and beaten paths, so that the very absurdity of the</hi><hi> thing may sometimes prove of service.”</hi><hi rend="notes_number _idGenCharOverride-1"><hi xml:id="footnote-002-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-002">5</ref></hi></hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>The chances of</hi><hi> experiment were one means by which Bacon attempted to distinguish</hi><hi> his approach from common household experimentation. By heating matter to</hi><hi> a degree previously unheard of through new technological setups—unbreakable</hi><hi> vessels, more highly regulated fire, inescapable material, extremities of temperature</hi><hi>—close distillation, Bacon imagined, might forcibly prevent the parts of distillation </hi><hi>from separating from one another or from escaping through smoke </hi><hi>or steam. The aim here was not to force an </hi><hi>artificial state but to mimic the power of natural processes </hi><hi>beyond what traditional laboratory vessels had previously been able to </hi><hi>achieve. Bacon compared “close distillation” to the development of the </hi><hi>fetus in the womb, “where the heat works, and yet </hi><hi>no part of the body is either emitted or separated”</hi><hi> (Bacon 1623).</hi><hi rend="CharOverride-1"> </hi><hi>Bacon’s comparison of close distillation to the development of </hi><hi>the fetus in the womb challenges the gendered readings of </hi><hi>his experimental approach as a masculine torture of a feminized </hi><hi>Nature. It shows how much that reading has been shaped </hi><hi>by an assumption of the centrality of mechanical philosophy that </hi><hi>treated Nature as a dead object to be manipulated and </hi><hi>controlled. A historical lens informed by the more recent history </hi><hi>of alchemy might lead to very different interpretations of the </hi><hi>handcuffs of Proteus. The examples that Bacon provides, such as “</hi><hi>close distillation” recall laboratory ambitions not to act against nature, </hi><hi>but to intervene in nature and recreate life (as in </hi><hi>the case of </hi><hi rend="italic">homunculi</hi><hi>) (Newman 2004).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Chymical laboratory apparatus already </hi><hi>aimed to recreate natural circuitous routes of transformation but did </hi><hi>so imperfectly, according to Bacon. In his </hi><hi rend="italic">History of Dense </hi><hi rend="italic">and Rare </hi><hi>he offered further examples of “how we carry </hi><hi>out distillations as in a cell enclosed on all sides,” </hi><hi>yet matter still escaped into its regular cycle of transformations. If this could</hi><hi> be prevented, “perhaps this will keep the Proteus of matter</hi><hi> in handcuffs and force it to act the contortionist and</hi><hi> get free that way.” He offered various suggestions (“Mandata”) for</hi><hi> how experiments tending toward close distillation might be set up</hi><hi>, although close distillation was not something that had ever been</hi><hi> achieved (Bacon 2000, “Historia densi et rari,” 101).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>The point</hi><hi> of such laboratory setups serving as the handcuffs of Proteus</hi><hi> was to recreate the labyrinths that ordinarily trace intricate routes deep within</hi><hi> the bowels of nature, beyond the view of the human</hi><hi> observer. Matter twisted and turned, seeking an easy escape from</hi><hi> the experimental setup, such as in the form of smoke</hi><hi> or steam. It found none, hemmed in by glass walls</hi><hi> or by relentlessly rising temperatures. Instead, as the experimenter wrestled</hi><hi> with it, continually blocking its course, matter took circuitous routes</hi><hi>, channeling into further cycles of distillation or into greater reactions</hi><hi> to heat (such as melting or calcination). Sometimes this struggle</hi><hi> meant preventing matter from more ordinary transformations (such as condensation</hi><hi>) in order to provoke more unusual or radical ones (such</hi><hi> as the development of a fetus).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>These experimental strategies</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>allow</hi><hi>ed the human observer to witness the processes of metamorphosis that ordinarily occurred in the much finer, more hidden </hi><hi>and otherwise inaccessible reticulations of nature. Humans usually relied upon “</hi><hi>the shapes and positions of vessels” to check, repel, release, </hi><hi>or direct the motions of bodies, as in alembics of </hi><hi>various forms. Nature was far subtler and did not rely </hi><hi>upon such gross structures for the shaping of matter. Bacon, </hi><hi>for instance, denied Telesio’s view that the shaping of </hi><hi>creatures in the womb occurs because of “channels and compartments” </hi><hi>that mould matter. Eggs, Bacon pointed out, have no such </hi><hi>interior folds yet still shape bodies (Bacon 2004, “Novum organum,”</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>435). Rather, the transformation of the fetus occurs through series of changes of matter on such a fine </hi><hi>level that they are ordinarily invisible. Folds existed in matter </hi><hi>on levels that were not ordinarily visible; in his </hi><hi rend="italic">History </hi><hi rend="italic">of Dense and Rare</hi><hi>, Bacon suggestively proposed that between the </hi><hi>two limits of dense and rare there was a fold </hi><hi>of matter, through which it can fold in upon itself </hi><hi>without a vacuum.</hi><hi rend="notes_number _idGenCharOverride-1"><hi xml:id="footnote-001-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-001">6</ref></hi></hi><hi> Through the notion of “close distillation,” </hi><hi>Bacon sought to imagine new experimental setups that could better </hi><hi>mimic and visualize these subtler structures of nature, identifying the </hi><hi>folds of matter that could only be discovered at the </hi><hi>very extremities of natural states.</hi></p><p rend="h2">4. “Coming to grips with nature” in Experimental Inscriptions</p><p rend="text"><hi>In a series of recent works, </hi><hi>Dana Jalobeanu has stressed how Bacon oriented his experimental investigations </hi><hi>towards “research” in his normative natural histories. I agree that </hi><hi>the way Bacon mobilizes experimental investigations often distinguishes them from </hi><hi>his source material in a way that could be called </hi><hi>research-oriented. However, I disagree in the nature of that distinction. Jalobeanu places Bacon in the context of</hi><hi> the Neostoic disciplining of the mind, an effort to curb</hi><hi> it of vitious tendencies and to reduce error in knowledge</hi><hi> (Jalobeanu 2015, 2016). Jalobeanu and other members of the Bucharest</hi><hi> school of Bacon studies have worked to identify Bacon’s</hi><hi> “medicine of the mind” or the method of his “experiential</hi><hi> literata” that could be extricated from his natural histories (Corneanu</hi><hi> 2011, Georgescu 2011, Dima 2011). This effort represents a newer and much more sophisticated version</hi><hi> of attempts to see Bacon as the author of experimental</hi><hi> method through the disciplining of subjective passion. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>In contrast to</hi><hi> this disciplining view of Bacon, elsewhere I place Bacon in</hi><hi> the context of a culture of undisciplining knowledge, including a</hi><hi> rejection of method and an abrogation of traditional epistemic divides</hi><hi> and categories (Keller 2023). Here, I have challenged the idea</hi><hi> that Bacon aimed to avoid error and to fix knowledge</hi><hi> by looking at Bacon’s discussion of ways to provoke</hi><hi> nature into a state of error through experiment. Alongside a</hi><hi> mutable form of experimentation that continually deferred the ultimate access</hi><hi> to truth, Bacon developed forms of experimental textual inscription, I</hi><hi> argue, that were tentative, contingent, and open to varying interpretations</hi><hi>. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon’s general literary practices fit this view. He wrote</hi><hi>, Julianne Werlin has argued, in a style that intentionally opened</hi><hi> his work up to multiple interpretations and slippage into error</hi><hi> (Werlin 2015). He continually shifted the meaning of words away from accepted</hi><hi> usage (Bacon 1605, Book Two, 75-60). His use of</hi><hi> terms was highly labile. Rather than fixing knowledge, Bacon “was</hi><hi> an inveterate reviser of his writings” (Serjeantson 2013, 1101). For</hi><hi> instance, Bacon returns to the myth of Proteus in many</hi><hi> different works, subtly altering the emphasis and even the subject</hi><hi> (such as matter or Nature). In each iteration of his</hi><hi> treatment of Proteus, Bacon constantly shifted and transformed his deployment</hi><hi> of the myth, as he did so often with other</hi><hi> leitmotifs that thread through his writings. His Protean rhetoric makes</hi><hi> his approach to Proteus itself difficult to pin down. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>This</hi><hi> view of Bacon’s mutable rhetoric runs counter to long</hi><hi>-standing accounts of scientific textuality in general and of Bacon</hi><hi> in particular as representing an effort to fix knowledge to</hi><hi> a straight-and-narrow pathway or method in order to</hi><hi> avoid error. Bruno Latour influentially related the fixing of knowledge into two-dimensional graphic form, as “immutable</hi><hi> mobiles,” in order for the European human to accumulate and</hi><hi> dominate global knowledge (Latour 1986, 1987). Scholars have linked Latour</hi><hi>’s discussion about the relationship between fixing and circulating objects</hi><hi> of study, observation, and domination back to accounts of Bacon</hi><hi> as establishing “the progressive accumulation and collection of data” (Langman</hi><hi> 2011, 63) and the “circulation of knowledge” (Lightman 2013, 10</hi><hi>).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Entire genres, from questionnaires to natural histories, have been termed</hi><hi> Baconian precisely due to their means of direction attention and</hi><hi> fixing inscription into generic forms that can be circulated among</hi><hi> multiple knowledge workers and recombined into larger sets of knowledge</hi><hi>. Peter Pesic has described Bacon’s prescription that “testing must</hi><hi> not be ‘blind and stupid [. . .] wandering and straying as [men</hi><hi>] do with no settled course,’ for which he provided Learned</hi><hi> experience or the Hunt of Pan, including “his reformulation of</hi><hi> the inductive method and the ‘tables of instances’ he proposed</hi><hi> to organize the fruits of observation and experiment” (Pesic 1999</hi><hi>, 83). Indeed, Bacon describes his “Table of the Coition and</hi><hi> Expansion of Matter in relation to Space in Tangible Bodies</hi><hi>,” an impressive spread of many types of matter and specific experimental measurements</hi><hi>, as a means of coming “to grips with nature as</hi><hi> if in a wrestling match” (Bacon 2000, “Historia densi et</hi><hi> rari,” 49). Yet, many areas of doubt remained in connection</hi><hi> with this subject, and he confessed that the findings in</hi><hi> his table remained continually provisional and the wrestling continued (Jalobeanu</hi><hi> 2015, 303). Furthermore, this was one of the easier subjects</hi><hi> to visualize and measure; as Bacon noted, the inquiry grew</hi><hi> tricky when it came to comparative bulks of pneumatic matter</hi><hi> (Bacon 2000, 65).</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>In his natural histories, rather than fixing and </hi><hi>disciplining knowledge, Bacon made considerable space for provisional knowledge, subjective </hi><hi>struggle, and the deployment of passions. He cautioned that he </hi><hi>only rarely proposed “certain imperfect attempts at the interpretation of </hi><hi>causes.” These served “more to suggest what could be than </hi><hi>to define what is” (Bacon 2007, </hi><hi rend="italic">Historia naturalis et experimentalis</hi><hi>, </hi><hi>14).</hi><hi rend="notes_number _idGenCharOverride-1"><hi xml:id="footnote-000-backlink"><ref target="_06.html#footnote-000">7</ref></hi></hi><hi> In order to mobilize knowledge, Bacon deployed a </hi><hi>strategy he had advertised since his 1605 </hi><hi rend="italic">Advancement of Learning</hi><hi> </hi><hi>of extending knowledge towards the new. This entailed awakening desire </hi><hi>in individuals to join the advancement of learning by pairing </hi><hi>much sought-after things deemed impossible (which he categorized as</hi><hi rend="italic"> </hi><hi>“optatives”), with the closest things to them that had been achieved</hi><hi>, which would inflame his audience with possibility of realizing much</hi><hi> desired goals and hint at possible directions for further investigation</hi><hi>. As he specified as part of the “norm” (“</hi><hi rend="italic">Norma</hi><hi>”) of</hi><hi> his history, “I set out works and things deemed impossible</hi><hi>, or at least so far undiscovered which fall under the</hi><hi> individual titles; and together with them I subjoin things already</hi><hi> discovered and lying within human power, which are closest and</hi><hi> most akin to those things deemed impossible and undiscovered, so</hi><hi> that human industry may be stimulated and souls fired” (Bacon</hi><hi> 2007, 17). In the gap he set up between the</hi><hi> desired thing and the approximation lay an invitation for others</hi><hi> to join in, often paired with an incentive to do</hi><hi> so. For example, one optative he listed in the history</hi><hi> of winds was a way “to forecast abundance or dearth</hi><hi> of corn and fruit every year.” Bacon suggested that this</hi><hi> knowledge could be deployed in “speculative buying and selling” in</hi><hi> order to corner the market on comestibles (Bacon 2007, 131</hi><hi>). Such examples speak to the risk-taking, subjectively motivated, and</hi><hi> imperfect forms of knowledge with which Bacon endowed his natural</hi><hi> histories. </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>Pace Latour, we might call Bacon’s forms of</hi><hi> inscription “mutable mobiles.” He idiosyncratically termed the provisional general statements</hi><hi> that he developed out of his experimental histories “</hi><hi rend="italic">canones mobiles</hi><hi>,” not because they were fixed statements that could move among</hi><hi> a wide readership, but because they were themselves moving targets</hi><hi> (Bacon 2007, 124 and 346). Rather than presenting knowledge as codified and completed</hi><hi>, Bacon’s wandering, mutable style encouraged participation in an infinitely</hi><hi> receding horizon when the advancement of learning would end and</hi><hi> the struggles of Proteus would cease.</hi></p><p rend="h2">5. Conclusion: On Not Having a Clue</p><p rend="text"><hi>Bacon never performed a “close distillation,” one</hi><hi> of his examples of what a handcuff of Proteus might</hi><hi> be. This was an entirely imagined experiment. In fact, one</hi><hi> might say the same for the struggle of Proteus as</hi><hi> a whole. The “vexations of art are indeed like the</hi><hi> chains and manacles of </hi><hi rend="italic">Proteus </hi><hi>which betray the ultimate strivings</hi><hi> and exertions of matter,” wrote Bacon</hi><hi rend="CharOverride-1"> </hi><hi>(Bacon 2004, 463.</hi><hi>) Yet, how could one ever know if such “ultimate strivings” had </hi><hi>been reached? For example, among the “</hi><hi rend="italic">canones mobiles</hi><hi>” or provisional </hi><hi>rules that Bacon attached to his </hi><hi rend="italic">History of Dense and </hi><hi rend="italic">Rare </hi><hi>was the statement, “There is a boundary or </hi><hi rend="italic">non </hi><hi rend="italic">ultra </hi><hi>of dense and rare, but not in any entity </hi><hi>known to us” (Bacon 2000, “Historia densi et rari,” 163). </hi><hi>As one endeavored to push Nature to an extremity, it could never be known where that terminus lay</hi><hi>. With the edges of possibility unknown, the struggle with Proteus</hi><hi> continued always </hi><hi rend="italic">plus ultra.</hi><hi> </hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>The rhetoric of Bacon advancing </hi><hi>knowledge </hi><hi rend="italic">plus ultra </hi><hi>is often interpreted as his provision of </hi><hi>a clue for humankind to follow in order to escape </hi><hi>the labyrinth of error found in the maze of words </hi><hi>into an open realm of more certain knowledge, grounded in </hi><hi>experience, and offering useful knowledge to all. This essay has </hi><hi>offered a very different interpretation, one which depicts Bacon as </hi><hi>clearing a space for labyrinthine investigations that tended towards, but </hi><hi>never reached, the ultimate boundaries of possibility. These investigations resisted </hi><hi>the pressure to exit the labyrinth and to produce useful </hi><hi>knowledge. They did not offer certain tabulations of knowledge, but </hi><hi>provisional, fragmentary, and moveable forms of inscription. In the myth </hi><hi>of Proteus, Bacon imagined an interplay between humans and knowledge </hi><hi>goals whose conclusion could only ever be in a deferred </hi><hi>future.</hi></p><p rend="text"><hi>This brings us back full circle to circuitous routes </hi><hi>as a tactic of delay and deferral. This essay suggests </hi><hi>that, pace Ginzburg, clues that efficiently cut through to knowledge production were </hi><hi>not particularly early modern. What was novel in the early </hi><hi>modern period was a rejection of attempts to escape from </hi><hi>the labyrinth of the world and instead to appreciate the </hi><hi rend="italic">ambages </hi><hi>themselves as a site and practice of knowledge. In </hi><hi>so doing, Bacon offers a new perspective on error. As </hi><hi>the struggle with matter builds an observable labyrinth, forcing Nature’</hi><hi>s twists and tuns to become visible, the experimenter does </hi><hi>not have fore-knowledge of what that structure will be. </hi><hi>The experimenter does not view the maze from above. Nor </hi><hi>does the experimenter possess any clue that can act as </hi><hi>a certain guide to unravel all the complexities of nature. </hi><hi>At most, the experimenter possesses an uncertain “anticipation” about what </hi><hi>might transpire. Bacon could only suggest what might be, rather </hi><hi>than define what was. Thus, in contrast to prior distinctions </hi><hi>between internal “maze-treaders” who felt lost in the labyrinth </hi><hi>and external “maze-viewers” who praised its intricacies, Bacon delineates </hi><hi>a new perspective on the labyrinth by reformulating labyrinth construction </hi><hi>as a dynamic, adaptive struggle.
